Stieglitz had the ability to see life as a still object. He sees distance and perspective as a complimentary trait to his photographs. His early work consists of pictures of things he found beautiful and eye-catching. I find the “Winter” photograph interesting for its contrast between the carriage, the foreground and background.
All of the photos taken by Stieglitz are in fact black and white, so it interest me why he is called the father of modern art. He didn’t particularly do any type of spectacular abstract art, which is kind of what most modern art consist of. He did make some composite images with photographs which would, to me, qualify as a take on modern at. An example is Dorothy True with the leg and the face. But what I find interesting is that Stieglitz never actually drew anything which is a huge risk in the path of becoming an Avant-Garde.
The photos by Stieglitz of Georgia O’Keeffe were most interesting to me. He went beyond what would be considered acceptable. He took pictures of women in the nude and what would be scandalous. Hands, is a piece that has a lot of sexual emotions flowing from the image and suggestive moods.
Stieglitz photography may be a part of why he is considered the father of modern art but I also think that the reason he is call such is because he is known to give new artist their big break and help the gain their fame. His photos did in fact push the limits of the definition of art as a hand-made composition so it is safe to say he changed the overall definition of what may be considered as art. He made the world know that anything that you find beauty in or creativity or anything, may be considered as art. That is the relationship between Stieglitz photos and the definition of art.
